About the Marshall Space Flight Center

Since it was established in 1960, the Marshall Center has used its engineering and scientific expertise to build launch vehicles, spacecraft and scientific instruments that enable the United States to explore and discover. Marshall provides the multidiscipline engineering expertise behind a variety of space transportation and propulsion systems, from Apollo to the space shuttle to the cutting-edge launch vehicles, spacecraft, space systems and scientific probes currently being developed. Marshall enables scientific discovery through development of hardware and instruments for projects including the Chandra X-ray Observatory, the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope and the Japanese-led mission Hinode studying the sun. The center develops, integrates and operates major components and systems on the International Space Station and supports its science operations around the clock.

Marshall also manages the Michoud Assembly Facility, a state-of-the-art facility in New Orleans where the space shuttle external tanks were built and which now will be used in the development of the Space Launch System.
